A RUSSIAN ICON: The Archangel Michael, 19th century. Based on imagery from the Book of Revelation, here Mikhail rides upon a red winged horse. A rainbow extends over his head, he holds the Gospels, a censer and a lance which pierces Satan shown below in a flaming abyss. The borders with the Guardian Angel and family saints. Also inset are cast bronze and enamel icons of St. Nicholas (upper left) and the Kazan Mother of God (upper right). The panel further painted with the Venerable Martha and Guardian Angel (left border) and Saints Zosima and Savatiy (right). Behind him with face covered is his disciple Micah. At top center the Trinity image, namesake of the Monastery he founded. Exquisite detail and quality.
