with dark brown patina
Height 10
inches (25.4 cm)
Signed on

Estimate
$7,500-$10,000
Bessie Potter was born in St.
Louis, Missouri in 1872. Her first training was at the Art
Institute of Chicago in 1889 where she worked as an
assistant to Lorado Taft. She opened her own studio in 1894
and gained early popularity for her plaster statuettes of
society women in order to make ends meet, although her
passion was for smaller, more intimate statues. A trip to
Paris in 1895-96 proved beneficial for the budding artist,
as she met Rodin and was awarded a bronze medal at the Paris
Exposition for her sculpture “Young Mother”. In 1898 she
became a member of the National Sculpture Society. She wed
the painter Robert Vonnoh the following year and the two
relocated to New York where they established a joint studio
in the city and summered at the Old Lyme Colony.
As her popularity grew, Vonnoh partnered with Roman Bronze
works, which cast her works until 1939. Vonnoh was the most
popular and prolific American genre sculptor during the
first three decades of the 20th century.

GRANT WOOD
(American 1892-1942)
Windmill
Oil on
canvas
18 inches
x 21 inches
Estimate
$130,000-$150,000
The offered lot shares many similarities to
works by Wood produced in the mid to late 1920’s. “Cornshocks”
1927 and 1928, “Midsummer” 1929, “Indian Creek” 1929 and
others. Unlike other paintings from this period, none seem to
exhibit the completeness of composition and subject, as does
the offered lot. At present, there appears to be no known
works by Wood executed before “American Gothic” that include
all the elements such as “Windmill” that would later be so
identified with Wood and his surroundings. Of all the symbols
of rural American that Wood would later incorporate into his
works, the windmill and cornshocks are the most frequently
depicted attributes. In the offered lot, cornshocks neatly
lined along the edge of a field and a windmill neatly tucked
near the farmhouse is quintessential Wood. This combination of
items, cornshocks and windmills, are similarly depicted in
“Woman With Plants” 1931, “Fall Plowing” 1931, “Self-Portrait”
1932, and “Stone City Landscape” 1932.
Provenance:
The Reverend and Mrs Waldemar W. Argow*, gift from the artist
Mrs. Rosemary Argow-Jennison, 1969
Mrs. Julia Jennison-Washburn, 1977
To the present owner, 2000
*The Reverend Waldemar W. Argow was minister of the Unitarian
Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the 1920’s. His wife became
acquainted with Grant Wood during this time and was an early
supporter of his. According to the family, the offered lot was
a gift in gratitude from Wood to Mrs. Argow for her patronage.

Omaha, Nebraska, Fontenelle Hotel, Omaha Society of Fine Arts:
Exhibition of Paintings by Grant Wood and Edgar Briton,
February 27-March 13, 1927.

GRANT WOOD
(American 1892-1942)
Industrial Landscape - View
from Van Vechten Park – Cedar Rapids, Ia,
1931
Oil on
board
Signed
lower right and dated 1931
13 inches
x 15 inches
Estimate
$30,000-$50,000
The offered lot would appear to be a view
of Cedar Rapids, Iowa from Van Vechten Park. Between the mid
1920’s and up to the early 1930’s, Wood made frequent trips to
the countryside to paint plein air. On these trips, made in
and around Cedar Rapids and Stone City, Wood was often
accompanied by his friend Marvin Cone. These excursions became
more frequent in 1932 and 1933 with the establishment of the
Stone City Art Colony, which emphasized outdoor oil sketching.
According to author and Wood expert Joseph Czestochowski,
“Wood placed a high value on these sketches, since they were
preparatory to contemplated works. They also reflected the
actual nuances of the countryside, a quality central to
regionalist philosophy.”
Provenance: Sotheby’s Chicago
Exhibited: Cedar Rapids Art Association circa 1931
Literature: Joseph S. Czestochowski, Marvin D. Cone and
Grant Wood An American Tradition, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 1990,
page 210 illustrates the offered lot in a vintage photo
depicting works by Grant Wood and Marvin Cone on exhibition
circa 1931. Also on page 212, fig. 15.
