In eight verses, the poem describes James Robert Watkins’ escape from slavery to Canada and then onto England where “man’s a man by law…I’ll no more dread the auctioneer, nor fear the master’s frown…”. The poem is signed “M.J. Harris, E. Lewis”. A later notation states: “Written for Eliza Lewis Burr, age 7, 1854”. James Robert Watkins (circa 1821-) escaped to Hartford, Connecticut, in May of 1844. He was married to Mary Eliza Wells, a free black woman, in April of 1847. Fearing that he would be recaptured, he escaped to England in 1851. While in England, Watkins wrote two books: one describing life as a slave, the other a book of poetry. Not long after, his father-in-law secured his freedom. He then returned to the United States where he continued writing and speaking out against slavery. The second document is a printed broadsheet (circa 1873) with the banner “To The White Men of Delaware”. The 13.5”x10” printed document attempts to persuade all white men of Delaware to vote against impending state legislation that would provide equal rights for all “negros”. Estimate $300-$500
