A RUSSIAN ICON: The Smolensk Mother of God 17th century. The prototype for this icon is said to have been painted by St. Luke and came from Byzantium to Chernigov in the year 1046. Later it was placed in the Smolensk Cathedral. It falls into the category type "Hodigitria" which is taken from the Greek and means way-shower. The term is derived from the gesturing right hand of the Virgin who "shows" the viewer "the way" to salvation in directing them to Her son Christ Jesus. 12.25 inches by 10.75 inches. (31.5 cm x 27.5 cm) Estimate $3,000-$4,000

A RUSSIAN ICON: Holy John the Forerunner, 18th century. Here John the Forerunner (known in Western Christianity as the Baptist) is depicted holding a diskos (a Eucharistic footed dish). It contains the nude infant Christ, symbolizing the Lamb of God of the Eucharist. He gestures towards the infant Christ and holds a scroll which begins "CE AGNETS BOZHIY"-"Behold the Lamb of God". He wears a camel hair shirt (vlasyanitsa) and is depicted with wings but should not be mistaken for an angel. The wings derive from the double meaning of the Greek word angelos, meaning both messenger and angel. 12 inches by 10.25 inches. (30.5 cm x 26 cm) Estimate $1,200-$1,800
