A RUSSIAN ICON: The Feodorovskaya Mother of God, circa 1700. A finely painted image of this tenderness variant. This icon takes its name from St. Feodor (Theodor) Stratilates who in the year 1239 was seen carrying this image through the streets of Kostroma. In the early 17th century it was carried by the deputation which implored young Mikhail Romanov to become Tsar of Russia. It thus became the patron of the House of Romanov. A RUSSIAN ICON: The Apostle St. John, 18th century. Here John is seen contemplating his gospel. An angel whispers divine guidance in his ear. Depicted in this manner, with hand held meditatively to his lips, he is generally called "John the Theologian in silence," recalling the type of Christ as angel known as "good silence". 12 inches by 10 inches.
