Provenance: Estate
of the artist
Cedar Rapids Museum of Art
Acquired in these showrooms by the present owner
Lela Briggs was an
extremely accomplished watercolorist who captured the rural experience
with her colorful pallet and sensitive eye. She studied for a period at
the Chicago Art Institute and summers at the University of Iowa, but was
probably most influenced by her experience at Grant Wood’s Stone City Art
Colony (1931-1933). Her subjects were her surroundings: a neighbor’s farm,
a small country store, or her own barnyard. Her first major exhibition was
the 1934 Iowa Art Salon where she received third prize for a watercolor
work. From that time forward Briggs enjoyed numerous awards at the various
exhibitions she entered. In 1942 she held her first of four “one woman”
shows which produced an avid following. A farm wife/mother, raising two
children in rural depression ridden America followed by war left little
opportunity for Briggs to accept invitations to larger exhibitions outside
Iowa. Her career was cut short with her sudden death at the age of 57 in
1953. While her works occasionally come up for auction, the bulk of her
paintings (over 500) were donated to various museums upon the death of her
husband Wilbur in 1988.

MARC CHAPAUD
(French b.1941) “La Place aux Herbs” oil on canvas, signed lower left
“Marc Chapaud”. Verso signed and with artist's label. 35”x46”.
Estimate $1,000-$1,500
Marc Chapaud was born in Paris on the 31st of July, 1941. In
1958 he enter the “Natione Superieure des Beaux Arts des Paris” to study
architecture. This was largely due to the fact that his father was an
architect. However, in 1960, he transferred to the study of painting. It
seems that the fine arts tendencies inherited from his seamstress mother
won out and in 1962, after a full course of studies, Chapaud left the
Beaux des Arts. Since then, he has had many one-man exhibitions, mainly in
Paris, but also in the U.S. and Japan. He is principally a landscape
painter but his architectural and artistic background make him skilled at
handling old buildings with their marvelous textures and their wealth of
light and shadows as exhibited in the offered lot.

In June of 1920,
Cone, together with fellow Cedar Rapids artist Grant Wood, traveled to
France on a painting excursion. A year earlier, Cone had spent about five
months studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Montpellier France, after
having served in the U.S. Army as an interpreter and aide to General
Hubert Allen. On August 22, 1920, and after having completed a month’s
worth of paintings, Cone and Wood returned to America aboard the S.S.
Grampian sailing out of Antwerp. On their return voyage, the two
artists exhibited works in the ship’s salon and subsequently at the Cedar
Rapids Art Association. While on board, Grant Wood introduced Cone to
Canadian passenger Elizabeth Winnifred Swift, whom Cone would marry one
year later. |
