A 19TH CENTURY NEW MEXICAN WOOD PANEL PAINTING, retablo, follower of Rafel Aragon, depicting San Jeronimo, Defensor de la Fe y Abogado para la Buena Muerte, or "Saint Jerome, Defender of the Faith and Intercessor for Holy or Peaceful Death". Gessoed wood with polychrome. Here Jerome is depicted in the wilderness, he holds a crucifix for contemplation in his right hand and with his left hand he beats his chest. At upper right a horn signifies the final judgment and below his attribute a lion. 7x6 inches.
