A MAGNIFICENT AND IMPORTANT TIFFANY FAVRILE GLASS FLORIFORM VASE circa 1905, of pinched and waisted ovoid form with everted rim. Tapering down an extended knobbed stem rising from a squat bell-form foot. In semi-translucent opal glass decorated with green pulled feathers. Iridescent gold highlights accent the body with opalescent foot. Signed "LC Tiffany Y8617 Favrile". Height 16.25". Estimate $16,000-$24,000 The floriform was one of the quintessential shapes of Tiffany glass and subscribed perfectly to Tiffany's concept of beauty, which was first to be comparatively small, second to be smooth, third to have variety in the direction of the parts, fourth to have those parts not angular but blend into each other, fifth to be of a delicate frame without any remarkable appearance of strength, and sixth to have colors clear and bright but not very strong and glaring. A magnificent example. Literature: "Louis C Tiffany Rebel in Glass" by Robert Koch and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Louis Comfort Tiffany at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, see Page 64 & 65 for similar examples of this form and decoration. |
