Darling was born in
Sandusky, Ohio
shortly before the Civil War. At the early age of 14 he began to study
under the tutelage of Henry Mosler (1841-1920) in Cincinnati. At the age
of 19 he moved to Munich and studied with Duveneck for three years. From
1886-1887 Darling studied at the Academie Julian, Paris with J.P. Laurens
and Benjamin-Constant. Later on he again studied with Mosler and also with
William M. Chase. He exhibited widely in Europe & the United States.
Darling established a studio in Holland where he lived and worked until the
outbreak of WWI at which time he returned to Toledo, Ohio where he taught
and became known as the "Dean of Toldeo painter". His works are held at
museums both in Europe and the United States. |
