A resident of Waterloo, Iowa, Held studied at the Cape Cod School of Art and The National Academy of Design where she was awarded the Suydam Bronze. Held taught for a short time with fellow Iowa artist Grant Wood at the University of Iowa. Never married, Held earned her livelyhood entirely from painting up until her death at age 90.
