A RUSSIAN ICON: Saint Panteleimon circa 1890s. A large and impressive church-size icon of the famous unmercenary physician saint. Naturalistically rendered with expert handling of the flesh tones, shading and drapery which is highlighted in gold. The 3rd century saint is traditionally depicted holding a medicine box in one hand and an ornate spoon in the other. His collar and cuffs embellished with a profusion of faux pearls and gemstones. The gold leaf background intricately incised with a spectacular design of scrolling strapwork and also painted to simulate cloisonné enameling. The Russian Monastery on Mt. Athos in Greece is dedicated to the saint. His name is Greek for "All-Merciful". A large icon of exceptional quality of the likes rarely encountered. A museum quality specimen of this patron of healers most likely from the local tier of an ornate iconostasis or perhaps an elaborate chapel. An impressive 35"x27.75" icon. Outstanding!
