MARVIN CONE (American 1891-1961) “Old Stone Quarry” 1933-34, oil on artist board. Signed lower right. 15”x18”.
Estimate $30,000-$35,000
Provenance:
Marvin Cone
To Mrs. Beth Miller, circa 1936 The offered lot
is related to a number of similar works that Cone executed between
1933 and 1936. It would seem likely that the offered lot was executed
around the same time as Cones paintings titled Washing Out-Stone City,
circa 1933 (catalog #282) Old Quarry, circa 1933-34 (catalog #292),
and River Bend (catalog #308). Furthermore it would seem possible that
this painting was done in the field while Cone was an instructor at
Stone City Art Colony.
Founded with a Carnegie Foundation grant, and under the leadership of
the Cedar Rapids Artists Association director Edward B. Rowan, Stone
City Art Colony was the Midwest’s answer to the various east coast and
west coast artist colonies that became popular at the first part of
the 20th century. Outdoor summer teaching was the cornerstone of the
short-lived artist colony. It was there that Cone applied his craft in
the traditional academic method as instructor painting landscapes for
the benefit of his students who were then expected to paint the same
setting.
As is illustrated in the offered lot, Cone was without question a
master of subtleness in his unique depiction of Midwest landscapes. In
an interview for the Coe College Cosmos in the early 1930’s Cone said:
“Art is one’s reaction to his surroundings. It may be only a new light
thrown upon something that before seemed insignificant. In a landscape
it may be only a new slant upon a familiar scene…” Indeed it is was
Cones “slant” on depicting landscapes that more than anything else,
brought him a degree of financial success as an artist. |

MARVIN CONE
(American 1891-1964) "Plant with Woman" oil on canvas.
17"x13".
Estimate $18,000-$25,000
Provenance:
Marvin Cone
To Gordon Fennell
To a private Midwest collector
Plant with Woman is a good example of Cones penchant for
still life paintings, which he clearly mastered. His attention to
detail particularly in composition and balance are clearly illustrated
in the offered lot. The tall and slender slightly curving plant form
is echoed in the female nude painting in the background, which rests
against the wall of Cones cramped studio. In an interview given in the
early 1930’s Cone said of still lifes, “There are many advantages in
the study of still life…The charm of still life lies in the greater
chance of expression. Still life offers to the painter a greater
choice in color, background, perspective, and light…The life blood of
art lies in the fact that no two people react to their surroundings in
the same way…Art is not didactic, moral or religious; its chief
mission is to give enjoyment and to enhance the value and appreciation
of life.”
A copy of a letter from the artist’s wife discussing this work and
other works accompanies the lot. |

(American 1891-1964) "Plant and Apples" oil on artist
board. Signed lower right "MARVIN CONE". 18"x15".
Estimate $18,000-$25,000
Provenance:
Private Collection, Arizona
Exhibited:
It would seem likely that the offered lot is indeed the painting
exhibited under the title “Plant and Apples” at the Chicago
Galleries Association, Chicago Illinois, December 8-31, 1933.
Literature:
Joseph S. Czestochowski, “Marvin D. Cone Art as Self Portrait” Cedar
Rapids, Iowa 1889, cat. No. 257, page 185.
The offered lot is related to a number of still life’s executed by
Cone in the years 1932-33. It is also very similar in composition and
subject to Cones painting entitled, Plant and Fruit, which depicts the
same tabletop, chair, tablecloth, and plant (see Joseph S.
Czestochwski, Marvin D. Cone and Grant Wood: An American Tradition,
page 62, cat. #61). |

JOHN FERY (Austrian/American 1859-1934)
Lake Josephine and Grinnell Glacier, Glacier National Park
Oil on canvas. Signed lower right “J. Fery”. Verso also signed and
inscribed with size and “Mt. Shasta”. 40”x60”.
Estimate $8,000-$12,000
Provenance: Private collection, Minnesota.
John Fery was born in 1859 into a prominent and wealthy Austrian
family, and grew up on his father’s estate, located between Linz and
Salzburg. He studied art in Vienna with Gripenkerl, in Dusseldorf with
peter Janse, and in Karlsruhe with Schwenlehr.
Fery also studied in Munich. He declined a permanent position at the
famous Dusseldorf Academy, preferring to come to the United States to
practice his art and to follow his interest in wilderness scenery.
Fery came to American in 1886 and he lived on the Eastern seaboard for
about five years. He quickly established himself as a successful
painted of American landscape and hunting scenes, living for several
years at Lake George and in the Catskill Mountain region, and later in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin and New Jersey. Around 1890 he returned briefly
to Europe.
It appears that the result of his return to Europe was the
organization of a hunting party led by Fery, which spent the years
1892 and 1893 traveling through the Midwest and far West United States
in search of wilderness scenery and wild game. An undated article from
the Milwaukee Journal provides a glimpse of the tour: “John Fery, a
native of Hungary (sic), and as such a sportsman of the word’s best
meaning, conceived the idea, of organizing a party of lovers of the
chase, selected from the European gentry and members of the
aristocracy, for hunting trip in the virgin hunting grounds of
Northern Rockies of America, which the completion of the Northern
Pacific (Railroad) had brought into the lime-light of European notice
at that time. A call issued to that effect by Mr. Fery in Hunter’s
Journal was soon answered by Count Bleuchar, by Count Zepplin, Harry
Meisenback, inventor of the half-tone process, and four other persons
who together with Mr. Fery made up a party of eight huntsmen and
started for the U.S. in 1893.”
The itinerary of the group included Lake Michigan, New Mexico,
Arizona, the Grand Canyon of Colorado, California, Oregon, and
Wyoming. Fery published an article recounting his experiences in the
European Hunter’s Journal under the title “Eine Jagt in Wyoming.” He
led a second expedition to the West in 1895, and these adventures were
the beginning of his career as a painter of the Western landscape.
Fery’s greatest patron was the Great Northern Railroad. He was
commissioned to do paintings of the scenery along the railroad’s route
through the West, particularly in Glacier National Park. He was an
important artistic stimulant in the creation of Glacier National Park,
just as Moran had been earlier in the creation of Yellowstone National
Park and Grand Canyon of the Colorado Park.
Fery died in Everett, Washington in 1934. |

GUSTAVE
SINGIER (French 1909-1984) "Port Breton" circa 1956. Oil on
canvas. Signed lower right and verso dated 1956 and inscribed with
title. 9.5"x5.75".
Estimate $1,000-$2,000
Provenance: Lot is accompanied by the
original receipt of purchase from Galerie Simone Heller, 33 rue de
seine, Paris, and dated February 15, 1966.
Gustave Singier is termed an "Ecole de Paris" artist. He was actually
born in Belgium He was a purist in abstraction, an avant-garde artist
who exhibited in the show "Twelve Painters of today", held in Paris in
1943. He had exhibited through the Salon d'automne and des
Independents throughout the 1930s. He had a major one-man show in
Stockholm and Brussels in 1951 and 53 respectively. He showed
throughout the 1950s at the Salon du Mai.
The arrival of Kandinsky and Magnelli in Paris in 1933 had been a
major influence eon the Ecole de Paris. However, rather than copying
the masters they developed their own artistic language. They departed
from the formal severit of Kandinsky's compositions and merged a pure
abstraction with a new set of aims. Alongside the other great post-war
abstract artist, Alfred Manessier, Singier progressed the form
dynamically throughout the next forty years. |

GRANT WOOD
(American 1891-1942) "Quetzal in Flight" circa 1912. Oil on artist
board. Signed lower right "GRANT WOOD". 31"x33.5"
(79cm x 89cm).
Estimate $15,000-$20,000
*Provenance:
Atlier Dore Gallery 1982-1988
Ms. Whoopi Goldberg and Mr. Ed Gold 1988-1992
Mr. Ed Gold 1992-2003
Acquired by the present owners, Mr. Bruce Wildstein and Mr. Basil
Collier, Beverly Hills California, from Mr. Ed Gold in July of this
year
The offered lot appears to have been created
from the outset as a fireplace screen. The remaining parts of the wood frame that
accompanies this lot is set with a pair of slightly arched feet,
attached to the base of the frame, which would allow it to stand
upright. It is perhaps related to an over mantle painting executed in
the year 1912 for Grant Woods friend Kate Loomis, see (James M.
Dennis, Grant Wood A Study in American Art and Culture, University of
Missouri Press, 1986, page 23, figure #6) However, the highly
developed landscape and foliage may suggest a slightly
later date.
According to information provided by the current consignor, the
painting first surfaced in California in 1982. It was acquired and
then offered by the San Francisco Gallery Atelier Dore. It was then
offered at a charity auction held in Los Angeles, California in 1988
which was sponsored by Michael Jackson and where it was acquired by
Ms. Whoopi Goldberg and Mr. Ed Gold
The painting is also accompanied by a photocopy of a hand written and
notarized
opinion regarding this painting offered by Grant Woods sister Nan Wood
Graham who examined the painting first hand in March of 1983 and at
which time stated that she believed the painting to be an “authentic
creation of my brother, Grant Wood…”
* Provenance as provided by present owner. |
