Atlier Dore Gallery 1982-1988

Ms. Whoopi Goldberg and Mr. Ed Gold 1988-1992

Mr. Ed Gold 1992-2003

Acquired by the present owners, Mr. Bruce Wildstein and Mr. Basil Collier, Beverly Hills California, from Mr. Ed Gold in July of this year

The offered lot appears to have been created from the outset as a fireplace screen. The remaining parts of the wood frame that accompanies this lot is set with a pair of slightly arched feet, attached to the base of the frame, which would allow it to stand upright. It is perhaps related to an over mantle painting executed in the year 1912 for Grant Woods friend Kate Loomis, see (James M. Dennis, Grant Wood A Study in American Art and Culture, University of Missouri Press, 1986, page 23, figure #6) However, the highly developed landscape and foliage may suggest a slightly later date.

According to information provided by the current consignor, the painting first surfaced in California in 1982. It was acquired and then offered by the San Francisco Gallery Atelier Dore. It was then offered at a charity auction held in Los Angeles, California in 1988 which was sponsored by Michael Jackson and where it was acquired by Ms. Whoopi Goldberg and Mr. Ed Gold

The painting is also accompanied by a photocopy of a hand written and notarized opinion regarding this painting offered by Grant Woods sister Nan Wood Graham who viewed the painting first hand in March of 1983 and at which time stated that she believed the painting to be an “authentic creation of my brother, Grant Wood…”
