A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON: The Vladimir Mother of God, circa 1575-1600. And set into a later (19th century) panel. The veil of the Virgin embellished with raised polychromed gesso beads to simulate seed pearls. The gilt and painted faux halo simulating a real halo and suggesting that the iconographer had before them a pre-existing model. The faces and hands finely painted and both the Christ childs garments and his mother heavily decorated with chrysography (some refreshened). A beautiful image. 12.5 inches by 10.25 inches (32 cm x 26 cm).
