A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON: The Mother of God, 19th century, Mstera or Mstera-trained iconographer working in Moscow. An exceptional and finely painted icon depicting the Mother of God holding the infant Christ and resting upon an ornate gold leaf throne. Overall executed in the traditional Old Style with exceptional detailing and highlighting throughout. Icons of this magnitude were most often displayed in the iconostasis to the immediate left side of the Royal Doors, on what is often referred to as the "Local Tier", or "Veneration Tier". It is called this because it is accessible to worshipers who may wish to venerate or kiss the icons. The decorated kovcheg and resplendent rendering identify this icon as being of very high quality.
