A RARE AND EXCEPTIONAL RUSSIAN ICON: The Appearance of the Kazan Mother of God Icon, circa 1890's. V.P. Gurianov or his workshop. This icon illustrates the story (left to right, top to bottom) of the appearance of the Kazan icon. At upper left the Mother of God with rays of fire emanating from Her image appears to the young girl Matrona and demands that she tell the authorities of the location of this icon. The authorities did not listen so then Matrona unearths the icon which was buried in the rubble of a burnt down house. As soon as the authorities heard about the miraculous discovery they placed the icon in the Church of St. Nicholas and later it was placed in the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Kazan. The exceptional quality, single hair brush detail and unique pallet and landscapes would suggest this icon was from the workshop of Vasily Pavlovich Gurranov, a noted icon painted with a prestigious workshop located in Moscow. Exceptional in every way. 30 inches by 27.5 inches (76 cm x 69.5 cm).
