A RUSSIAN ICON: St. Nicholas, c.1825, Palekh School. Here Nicholas is depicted in a bust portrait-type composition popularized by Palekh trained artists. Although the basic format pre-dates known Palekh examples. Based on existing specimens, it would appear this depiction, rather than the more common one with Nicholas attired as Bishop and holding the Gospels, was quite popular in the 18th/19th c. The offered example if finely painted and in excellent condition. The left border displays the Guardian Angel and the right border the Prophet Malakhi. 10.75"x12.5".

A RUSSIAN ICON: The Meeting of the Lord, 19th c. Here the aged Simeon-BOGOPRIYMETS (the "God-Receiver" Luke 2:25-38) meets Christ who has been brought to the temple by his parents and the Prophetess Anna. Finely painted. 12"x10.5".

The Mother of God and infant Christ seated upon an elaborate throne and flanked by the Holy Martyr Triphon and the Venerable Zosima (left) and the Holy Martyr Panteleimon and the Venerable Savvatiy (right). God the Father delivers a blessing from the top. Of exceedingly high quality. 12.25"x10.5".
