A RUSSIAN ICON: St. Nicholas, mid 19th c. Classic Palekh School. Here Nicholas is depicted in the traditional manner, dressed as bishop, delivering a blessing and holding the Gospels open to Luke 6:17. Beautiful and ornate detailing throughout. The left border with the bishop Saint Averkiy and on the right border the Holy Martyr Trophimus. In original "as found" condition. Saint Averkiy (Abercius) is distinguished by the title "Equal-To-The-Apostles". He was bishop of Hieropolis in the 2nd century and was considered a great miracle worker. 14"x12". |

A RUSSIAN ICON: St. Nilus of Stolbensk, 18th c. Here Nil is shown in monastic garb. He stands before Christ who blesses him and the island monastery he founded is in the background. Nil Stolbenskiy, who died in 1554, takes the second part of his name from Stolbensk Island on Lake Soliger, where he lived previously. The somewhat faded inscription at the upper left reads: The Image of the Venerable Nila Stolbenskiy Wonder-Worker. 13.75"x10.75". |

A RUSSIAN ICON: The Elevation of the Cross, 19th c. A beautiful icon faithfully executed in the 16th century style. At top center Bishop Makarius raises the cross as those gathered look on including Saints Helen and Constantine. The inscription along the top border identifies the image as "The Elevation of the Cross of Our Lord" - "Vozdvizhenie Kresta Gospodneya". The Elevation of the Cross is a major festival celebrated on September 14th. A rarely encountered theme. 12.5"x10". |

A RUSSIAN ICON: St. Nicholas of Mozhaisk, c.1890. In this less frequently encountered variant Nicholas is depicted full length with a sword and building held in his outstretched arms. Although the existing inscription simply identifies the subject as "The Holy Nicholas Wonder-Worker", this composition is usually associated with the city of Mozhaisk. 12.25"x10.5". |
