John Taylor Arms is best known for his etchings of medieval architecture. He was born in Washington DC in 1887, and studied at both Princeton and MIT with Ross Turner, D.A. Greg, and Felton Brown. He began his career as an architect, but took up printmaking in the early 1920s. He traveled throughout Europe, often using Gothic architecture as inspiration for his etchings.

Jay Norwood Darling ("Ding") was born in Norwood, Michigan 1876. He studied at Beliot College in Wisconsin where he earned his Ph.D. in 1900 and took a cartoonist position for the Souix City Journal in1901. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1923, and in 1934, his design was accepted for the $1.00 Federal Hunting Stamp, which shows two mallards in flight with a blue background (as shown in the offered lot).

Born in London, England, Dawson-Watson painted in Giverny 1885-90. At the urging of C. Beckworth, he came to the U.S. in 1893. In 1927 he established his own studio in San Antonio, after hearing about the San Antonio Wildflower Painting Contest.
