RUSSIAN ICON: The Entry Into
Jerusalem,
circa 1890, probably Palekh school. A finely painted example of the
important church feast. Here Christ is seen riding an ass, his disciples
behind him and a crowd of onlookers including some carrying palms, look
on. The city walls and gate to the city are shown rear right.
Exquisitely painted. The borders in faux enameling. The top border with
a condensed inscription identifying the image as "The Entrance Into
Jerusalem of our Lord Jesus Christ." Beautiful!

RUSSIAN ICON: The Elevation of
the True and Life-Giving Cross, circa 1890. This icon
illustrated the feast celebrated on September 14th (Sept. 27th New
Style). At center the Bishop of Jerusalem, Makarius together with
Sylvester, elevate the cross before a gathering of people. On the left
the Emperor Constantine and his mother Helena who is said to have
discovered the true cross of Christ at the site of the Holy Sepuleher.
Painted following the 16th century style, the borders with faux cloisonné
enameling. Beautiful! 12.25"x10.5". |

RUSSIAN ICON: Mother of God
Joy to All Who Suffer, 19th century, probably Palekh.
An interesting and unique variation. The Mother of God in the center
within a circle of light. She holds a scepter and a flower and scroll.
She is surrounded by angels and suffering humans. At top Christ and God
the Father place a crown on the Virgin. Painted in the miniature
technique with exception single hairbrush detail. A beautiful and unique
variant. 11.5"x10". |

RUSSIAN ICON: The Crucifixion,
19th century. At center the crucified Christ surrounded by the three
Marys at left and the Apostle John and the Roman Centurion Longinus at
right. The corners depicting the Removal From the Cross and the
Placement in the Tomb. The borders with Saints Guriy, Samon, Aviv and
Boniface. 14"x12.25". |

RUSSIAN ICON: A Matching Three
Piece Deisis Grouping, 19th century. A beautiful set
of icons depicting Christ (the Lord Almighty) at center, Christ delivers
a blessing and holds an open book of Gospels to Matthew 11:28. On the
left and right The Mother of God and John the Forerunner (Baptist)
intercede with Christ on behalf of humanity. The Virgin holds a scroll
with text that begins "Ruler Most Gracious, Lord Jesus
Christ". Saint John holds a palen which contains the infant Christ
to whom he points. His scroll begins "Behold the Lamb of
God...". The background intricately incised. The borders
beautifully decorated to simulate cloisonné enameling. A very fine,
rare and beautiful group. 9"x21" (together). |

RUSSIAN ICON: Saint Nicholas,
Ural Mountain School, circa 1825. A very fine and less frequently
encountered bust portrait with Gospels and blessing hand executed on a
gold leaf ground. The borders with St. Peter Metropolitant of Moscow and
Saint Gregory. Beautiful untouched condition. 10.5"x9.25". |

RUSSIAN ICON: The Iverskaya
Mother of God, 19th century. A beautifully painted
icon executed in the traditional Old Style. The entire image overlaid
with an ornate riza. 12.5"x10.5".

RUSSIAN ICON: The New
Testament Trinity,
circa 1890. Although this Trinity pattern was officially unacceptable,
it nevertheless was very common. Here Christ is seen on the left holding
his cross. On the right is God the Father of Lord Sabaoth. Depicting God
in such a manner was condemned by the Seventh Ecumenical Council and
forbidden by the Council of Moscow in 1666. Above them along the top is
a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit. The gold leaf field incised to create
a ray-like pattern. The borders colorfully decorated in faux enameling.

RUSSIAN ICON: A
Rare, Artist Signed Example of the Smolensk Mother of God,
18th century. A charming and tender icon of this famous Hodigetria
variant. The Virgin and Child framed with an ornate decorative border.
An abbreviated Old Church Slavonic title appears over the left shoulder
of Mary. It reads "The Image of the Smolensk Hodigetria Most Holy
Mother of God." Excellent condition. The mid-left border with
period inscription "painted by Ermon Danilov".

19th century. At center Christ is seated upon a throne. He holds a
gospel open to Matthew 11:28. On the left the Mother of God on the right
John the Forerunner. The left border with the Guardian Angel on the
right border Saint Basil the Great. In original untouched condition.

19th century. A beautifully painted icon of this popular image depicting
the Virgin and Child in a tender cheek-to-cheek embrace. Following the
traditional Old Style of painting. Beautiful. 14"x11.5". |

Almighty,
19th century. Christ delivers a blessing and holds the Gospels open to
Matthew 11:28. The title of this subject is taken from the book of
Revelation 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega says the Lord, Who Is,
Who Was, and Who Is To Come, the Almighty". Intricately decorated
background and borders. Executed in the traditional Old Style.

19th century. A full-length depiction of this heavenly messenger.
Gabriel holds a stem of flowers and a lantern. Christ delivers a

RUSSIAN ICON: St. Nicholas the
Wonderworker, 18th century. A traditional
depiction of Nicholas shown as Bishop, holding the Gospels and
delivering a blessing. The entire icon overlaid with an elaborately
repousséd and chased silver riza with applied halo. Riza dated 1786 and
with indistinguishable makers mark. A beautiful icon having been
professionally restored. 12.5"x11". |
