DING DARLING
(c.1934) drypoint etching "Here They Come” (signed lower right in
pencil. 11"x18.75"). Together with a monochromatic print of
the drypoint etching "Design for the First Federal Duck Stamp
412/2000", together with a $1 Federal Duck Stamp issued by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (Migration Bird Hunting Stamp, design shown in
print above it) and a $5 50th Anniversary Conservation Stamp
issued by the J.N. Ding Darling Foundation, marked “void after June
30, 1985”. 9.5"x6.75".

Norwood Darling (“Ding”) was born in Norwood, Michigan 1876.
He studied at Beliot College in Wisconsin where he earned his
Ph.D. in 1900 and took a cartoonist position for the Souix City Journal
in1901. He was awarded the
Pulitzer Prize in 1923, and in 1934, his design was accepted for the
$1.00 Federal Hunting Stamp, which shows two mallards in flight with a
blue background (as shown in the offered lot). |

Taylor Arms is best known for his etchings of medieval architecture. He
was born in Washington DC in 1887, and studied at both Princeton and MIT
with Ross Turner, D.A. Greg, and Felton Brown. He began his career as an
architect, but took up printmaking in the early 1920s. He traveled
throughout Europe, often using Gothic architecture as inspiration for
his etchings. |
