“Leon Lapierre was born in Jacmel, studied at Lycee Pinchinat, and practiced as an amateur painter before he joined the Centre d’ Art in 1948. He was one of the breakaway group who quit the Centre d’ Art to form the Foyer des Artes Plastiques in the early 1950s, where he emerged as one of the Foyer’s most active members.” (Edwidge Danticat & Jonathan Demme  Island on Fire.  New York; Kaliko Press, 1997.)

SOLOMON MAISEEVICH GERSHOV (Russian 1906-1989) "Industrial Landscape" gouache on paper, signed lower right. 22"x27". (not pictured).

Born in Dvinsk Latvia, Gershov studied at the Art School in Minsk & the Academy in St. Petersburg. His works often focus on the Jewish life of Russia. Many of Gershov's paintings were brought out of Russia by the sculptor Fredda Brilliant & husband Professor Emeritus, Herbert Marshall, former director of the Center for Soviet & East European Studies, Southern Illinois University, U.S.A. From the 1930s through 1960s Fredda developed a close friendship with Gershov & collected many of his works along with works by other Russian artists.
