derives its title from the twelfth "house" (Greek oikos)
of the Akathist Canon - "Rejoice, Indestructible Wall of the

Greek inscription comes from the Septuagint version of the Psalms
(and not the ordinary text at that, with the right side of the
inscription being a variant reading of the text); It is Psalm
45:5-6, which generally reads: "God is in the midst of Her;
she shall not be moved; God shall help her toward the
morning." The depiction of Mary shown standing full-length in

RUSSIAN ICON: The Quick To Hear Mother of
God , 19th century. A colorful and
naturalistic rendering of this famous Mt. Athos icon. The title
for this icon originates from an incident that took place at a
monastery on Mt. Athos in the year 1664. As the legend goes, a
serving man was accustomed to pass by a certain icon of the
Virgin, while carrying a smoky torch. As he was passing the icon
one evening, he heard a voice warning him not to pass that way
again with his torch, "carelessly and shamelessly blackening
my image". The man thought it was someone playing a joke and
he continued his daily rituals even though he continued to hear
the voice. Suddenly he went blind. He then prayed to the Virgin to
intercede on his behalf and asked that he regain his vision. His
prayers were "quickly" answered by the Virgin and thus
the title for this icon. 9"x7". Estimate $175-$350 |
