World Treasures Bring World Record Prices at Jackson’s

CEDAR FALLS, IA. - Bidders from around the world converged on the sleepy Northeast Iowa hamlet of Cedar Falls so as to compete for a multitude of world treasures offered at Jackson’s November 15th & 16th auction producing total sales of $4.3 million.

The two day auction featured a wide and interesting variety of fine art and antiques including a collection of Old Master paintings, Imperial Russian works from the Dr. John Sinsky lifetime collection and an excellent offering of Chinese and European works as well. Over 650 bidders registered for the sale representing 33 countries.

Some of the many highlights of the auction include a lovely diminutive (8cm x 11cm) gold triptych icon of the Kazan Mother of God by Faberge workmaster Johan Victor Aarne that sold to an American bidder for $240,000.00. A small 2.6 inch (6.8cm) Russian silver and shaded enamel box by Feodor Ruckert came in at $132,000.00 and a lovely Faberge shaded enamel cigarette case sold for $120,000.00.

A small but interesting group of old Russian icons from the Dr. Sinsky collection drew a great deal of interest worldwide with intense in house, telephone and internet bidding. Highlights include a very fine albeit small, circa 1500 icon of St. George measuring 28cm x 21cm which sold for $72,000.00. A rare 16th century didactic icon depicting the subject titled You Are a Priest Forever after the Order of Melcchizedek measuring 23cm x 18cm sold for $84,000.00 and an icon of St. John the Forerunner measuring 26cm x 20cm finished at $60,000.00.

There were a number of other very interesting Russian works that did quite well including a group of 15 Russian porcelain figures from various factories including Popov, Gardner, and Kornilov that totaled $81,720.00.

Old Master paintings and European works also saw a great deal of interest such as a large (120cm x 99cm) portrait of a woman holding a fan by Dutch artist Jan Lievens (1607-1674) which sold for $84,000.00, and an unsigned painting depicting the Old Testament scene of Isaac blessing Jacob attributed to the circle of Rembrandt sold for $24,000.00. An interesting Viennese enamel scepter dating to the last quarter of the 19th century and measuring 87cm sold for $76,800.00 and a Viennese enamel cornucopia of the same period sold for $38,400.00.

Chinese arts continue to attract strong interest as validated by the carved white jade brush pot measuring 16.5cm which sold to a Chinese bidder for $31,200.00. A lovely gilt bronze figural grouping of Immortals, Qianlong period, and measuring 20cm sold to the phone for $33,600.00, and an interesting Chinese famille rose double vase measuring 31cm sold for $24,000.00.

American art witnessed a new world record in the selling of a Marvin Cone (1891-1961) Rural Iowa farmscape at Dusk that went to a phone bidder for $186,000.00.
