Turned hickory wood bat personally autographed by Babe Ruth signed with fountain pen & ink “Babe” Ruth 1926” between embossed marks “Trademark George “Babe” Ruth Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.” And oval “Louisville Slugger 125 Hillerich & Bradsby Co. Made in U.S.A. Louisville, KY. Trademark Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.” End of handle embossed “35”. Very fine original condition and finish with light scuffing and minor indentations on reverse. Handle shows minor wear from usage. L.35”. Lot is accompanied by additional personal belongings of Walter A. Axel including a 1920s period navy blue wool ball cap, a Wilson horsehide glove #K3140, a stitched horsehide baseball, a 1920s period 5”x7” photograph of 9 ball players including Walter Axel (top row center) and a “Championship” pendant with embossed figure of a batter, attached to a key chain. 424       WRIGHT, ORVILLE (1871-1948) American Aviation Pioneer. Pen and ink signature approximately 3”x1.5” on papercard 4”x2”. Orville Wright was born in Dayton, Ohio and with his brother Wilbur (1867-1912) is credited with the first successful flight of self-powered heavier than air machine.

425       EDISON, THOMAS (1847-1931) American Inventor. Pen and ink signature approx. 2.5”x1.5” on paper card 3.25”x2.25”. Edison was born in Milan, Ohio. As an inventor he is credited with discovery of the phonograph, the motion picture, the stock ticker and the electric light.

426       BARTON, CLARA (1821-1912) American Humanitarian. Pen and ink signature approximately 2.75”x1” on papercard 4”x2.25”. Born in Oxford, Massachusetts, Barton is credited with forming and being the first director of the American Red Cross.

427       LONDON, JACK (1876-1916) American Writer. Dated pen and ink signature (April 7, 1913) 3”x1.25” on paper card 3.5”x2”. Born in San Francisco, London participated in the Alaskan gold rush in 1898. His experiences there provided the story line for some of the most popular books in American literary history. The Call of the Wild, written in 1903 remains a favorite to this day.

428       DUNBAR, PAUL LAURENCE (1872-1906), American Poet. Pen and ink signature 3.5”x1” on paper card 2.25”x3.75”. Born in Dayton, Ohio, the son of slaves, Dunbar was one of the first black writers to gain recognition.

429       ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY (1767-1848), American Patriot, 6th President Of The United States And Son Of The 2nd President. Pen and ink signature 1/25”x.25” cutout of document 2.5”x1”. Adams was born in what is now Quincy, Massachusetts. Adams served in public office for 50 of his 81 years as diplomat, senator, President, Secretary of State, and as a member of the US House of Representatives.

430       CLEMENS, SAMUEL (1835-1910) American Writer. Pen and ink handwritten letter signed and written by Clemens on stationary from the “Express Printing Company” and dated September 27, 1869. “Gentlemen: - I am going to lecture only half the season, and my present engagements render it impossible for me to go further west than Pittsburgh. Otherwise I would be most happy to profit by your kind invitation. Very truly yours, Samuel L. Clemens.”  Under the pen name of Mark Twain, Clemens became American’s great storyteller and his works are considered classics and are still being printed. At the time this letter was written, Clemens had just published “Innocents Abroad” a collection of stories from his recent trips to Europe and Palestine. Clemens was in great demand as a lecturer and the “engagements” to which he refers were probably his one-man lectures.

431       TWAIN, MARK Pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), American Author. Pen and ink signature 2.5”x.71” on paper card 4.5”x2.25”. While “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” is considered his masterpiece, many of his other books are still enjoyed today by millions of people in countries around the world.

432       WASHINGTON, BOOKER T. (1856-1915), American Educator. Pen and ink signature 3”x1.5”, “Booker T. Washington, Tuskegee, Alabama, May 26, 1912” on paper card 225”x3.75”. Born into slavery, Washington urged African Americans to uplift themselves through education and economic advancement. Credited with being a principal in the founding of Tuskegee University, Washington soon became a spokesperson for black Americans. Shortly before the date on the signature card, Washington published his popular autobiography “Up From Slavery”.

433       KIPLING, (JOSEPH) RUDYARD (1865-1936), English Writer And Noble Laureate. Pen and ink signature 2”x.5” cutout from document or letter 1”x3.25”. Kipling, born in Bomay, India and was educated in England. His remarkable rhymed verse was written in the slang used by the ordinary British soldier. The “Jungle Book” and the “Just So Stories” were popular with children all over the world.

The youngest man to serve as President of the United States, Roosevelt was a vigorous and strong individual who waged a power struggle with business and labor groups. He enjoyed America’s place as a world power, and his social and economic reforms were some of the first attempts to deal with problems created by the modern industrial society. Roosevelt was adored by the majority of Americans and when he ran for office in his own right in 1904, he was elected by a great majority.

435       CODY, WILLIAM FREDERICK (Buffalo Bill) (1846-1917), American Guide, Scout & Showman. Pen & ink signature (both William F. Cody & Buffalo Bill) 2.5”x.5” on papercard 3.5”x2”. Born in Scott County, Iowa his family moved to Kansas in 1854. At the age of 14 he became one of the riders of the newly established Pony Express. Cody served as a scout and guide for the Union Army during the Civil War. Following the war, he contracted with the Kansas-Pacific Railroad to furnish buffalo meat for workers on the line. He claimed to have killed over 4,000 buffalo in less than 18 months, earning him the nickname “Buffalo Bill”.

436       BELL, ALEXANDER GRAHAM (1847-1922), American Inventor Of The Telephone And Teacher Of The Deaf. Pen and ink signature 3”x.5” on signature card (7.25”x4”) type-written address and greeting, “Mr. A.J. Warr, Box 145, Avery, Iowa; Dear Sir, Agreeably with your request I have pleasure in sending you my autograph hereon. Yours Sincerely, Alexander Graham Bell” Bell was born in Edinborough, Scotland. On March 10, 1876 Bell successfully transmitted over wire the sentence, “Watson, come here, I want you.” Further work led to the organization of the Bell Telephone Company in 1877.

437       GARDNER, ERLE STANLEY (1889-1970), American Detective Novelist. Pen and ink signature 4”x1.5” on paper autograph card 6.25”x3.75”. Autographed for Mrs. Isabel Rinehart on August 5, 1959. Gardner is best known for his character Perry Mason who appeared in more than 80 of Gardner’s novels.

438       AMUNDSEN, ROALD (1872-1928), Norwegian Polar Explorer. Pen and ink signature 2.5”x1” on paper card 2.75”x1.5”. Born in Borge, Norway, he was educated at the University of Oslo and entered the Norwegian Navy in 1894. From 1903 to 1906 he led his first important expedition through the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean and determined the position of the North Magnetic Pole. On December 14, 1911 he reached the South Pole, the first person known to have accomplished this feat.

439       MAYO, WILLIAM JAMES (1861-1939) AND CHARLES HORACE (1863-1939), American Physicians. Pen and ink signatures on paper cards 3.25”x2.5”. The Mayo family, originally from England, became skilled surgical physicians, and in 1915 they formed their first clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. It became a model for private clinics throughout the United States.

441       PEARY, ROBERT EDWIN (1856-1920), American Explorer. Pen and ink signature 2.75”x.25” on paper card 3.5”x2”. Peary, born in Cresson, PA became a member of the U.S. Navy in 1881. During his lifetime he made 7 polar explorations, surveyed Greenland, and developed the Peary system of arctic travel. He was credited with discovering the North Pole in 1909.

442       COOLIDGE, (JOHN) CALVIN (1872-1933) 30TH President Of The United States. Pen and ink signature 3”x1.25” on paper card 3.5”x2.5”. Coolidge became president upon the death of President Harding. Coolidge was famous for his remark, “The chief business of America is business.”

443       DARLING, J.N. (DING) (1876-1962), American Political Cartoonist And Conservationist. Pen and ink signature and cartoon on back of partial check blank 6”x4”. Darling began his cartooning career in 1900 with the Sioux City Journal and in 1906 moved to the Des Moines Register where he remained for 44 years. His cartoons won Pulitzer Prizes in 1923 and 1942.

444       DEWEY, GEORGE (1837-1917), American Naval Officer. Pen and ink signature 4”x1” on paper card 5”x1.5”. Dewey was born in Montpelier, Vermont and educated at the US Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1858. He served with Admiral Farragut during the Civil War. IN 1897 he was given command of the Asiatic squadron of the U.S. Navy. In April 1898 the United States declared war on Spain and Dewey moved his fleet into Manila Bay, Philippines and completely destroyed the Spanish fleet without the loss of a single person.

445       DOYLE, SIR ARTHUR CONAN (1859-1930) British physician, novelist, and creator of Sherlock Holmes. Pen and ink signature 2.5”x0.5” on cut-out from document 4.5”x1.5”. Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, educated at Stonyhurst College and the University of Edinburgh. He had his own medical practice from 1882-1890. His first of 60 stories featuring Sherlock Holmes was published in 1887.

446       WELLMAN, WALTER. Early aviator whose attempt to cross the Atlantic in a dirigible failed (1910). 447       BURBANK, LUTHER (1849-1926) American horticulturist. Pen and ink signature 3”x1” on paper card. 3.25”x1.75”. With accompanying photo postcard from Santa Rosa, California Chamber of Commerce. Burbank was born in Lancaster, MA. He began his career in 1870 and is credited with having developed more than 200 new variants of plants.

448       CLEVELAND, GROVER (1837-1908). 22nd and 24th President of the U.S. Pen and ink signature and dated “May 12, 1902” 2.5”x0.75” on paper card 3.75”x2.25”. The only president to be re-elected after having been defeated. His motto “A public office is a public trust” caused him a great deal of trouble with powerful political and business people.

449       CARNEGIE, ANDREW (1835-1918) American industrialist and philanthropist. Pen and ink signature 2.5”x0.5” on paper card 3.5”x2”. Born in Dunfermlime, Scotland, he came to the U.S. in 1848. He founded the Carnegie Steel Co. and in 1901 controlled 25% of the steel production in the U.S. Many cities in the U.S. and Great Britain have Carnegie Libraries as the result of his endowments.

450       FIELD, MARSHALL (1834-1906) American business leader. Pen and ink signature 3.75”x1.25” on paper card 4”x2.25”. WANAMAKER, JOHN (1838-1922) American merchant pen and ink signature 2”x1” on paper card with engraving of Independence Hall 3.5”x4.5”. Both of these men figured prominently in the development of modern merchandising. Wanamaker served as Postmaster General under Benjamin Harrison. Field donated the money to build and maintain the Columbian Museum of Chicago (now the Field Museum).

451       BRYAN, WILLIAM JENNINGS (1860-1925) American political leader and orator. Pen and ink signature 3.5”x1” on paper card 4.25”x2.5”. Born in Salem, IL, Bryan became a lawyer and practiced in Illinois. He was later elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He was the Democratic Presidential candidate in three elections.

452       CURTISS, GLENN HAMMOND (1878-1930) American aviator and inventor. Pen and ink signature 2.75”x0.75” on paper card 2.5”x2”. Curtiss was credited with many firsts in the development of aircraft, especially seaplanes.

454       TAFT, WILLIAM HOWARD (1857-1930) 27th President of the USA and tenth Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Pen and ink signature 2.75”x1” on paper card 4.75”x3.75”. Printed in upper right Washington D.C. Taft was born in Ohio to an old and established family. He was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Harding in 1920 where he served until his death.

455       MILES, NELSON APPLETON (1839-1925). Civil War Medal of Honor winner and Field Commander during the Indian Wars. Pen and ink signature and rank designation front and reverse of paper card 4”x2.25”. Miles went from “volunteer” to “Commander of the Army” his career spanning 43 years.

The carved and polychrome composition socket head attached to a wooden body with jointed limbs, molded cloth hands and leather covered feet. L.22”.  Carved by Earl Montgomery (1921-1987). Montgomery, a stage and screen character actor, began his career at the age of 12 as a puppeteer. The offered lot “Martin, the Wood Cutter, was carved by Montgomery” and performed in shows traveling with renowned 1930s puppeteer Tony Sarge. Montgomery’s career spanned over 30 years of Broadway plays and included television appearances on Lassie, Mary Hartman, Kojak, Love Boat, Charlie’s Angels, and the Jackie Gleason Show as well as motion pictures including: Heaven Can Wait, Fist, The Detective, and others. Lot includes a newspaper photocopy article showing Montgomery, age 12, holding the offered lot, a 1980’s publicity bio with stills, and a copy of Montgomery’s obituary.
