The vast majority of Native American artifacts in this sale are from the Walter Woody King collection. Many Midwest artifact collectors and museum personnel were familiar with Mr. King’s extensive collection. Jackson’s is pleased to offer this fine assemblage gathered over a period of 60 years.                     Walter Woody King (1914-1976)

Walter Woodrow (Woody) King was born and raised in central Iowa. As a result of his talent as an artist, Woody spent the W.W.II years in Cheyenne and San Francisco as a graphic designer with United Airlines, a contractor responsible for outfitting new B-17s for combat in Europe & retrofitting older Flying Fortresses. In 1947, Woody brought his family back to Conrad, Iowa where he and his wife, Vida, owned and operated King’s Café for 10 years. He then followed his calling as an artist and began work with Lennox Industries in advertising and production management functions until his death in 1976. He always welcomed an opportunity to share his Indian artifact collection and knowledge of Indian lore, but especially enjoyed telling about finding his first arrowhead in 1928. At the age of 14, Woody was cleaning his breakfast plate in a small rapids having spent the previous night camped on the riverbank. He turned to set the plate down and noticed something unusual. There on the sandbar beside him lay a completely exposed perfect arrowhead. That awesome moment was the beginning of his life-long quest and interest in Indian artifacts and lore. He said that his easiest & best artifact "Finds" were in the spring of the year after the fields were freshly plowed followed by heavy rain. Rarely did he find fully exposed arrowheads. Usually he would spot a small piece of rock that, when uncovered, would reveal an ax or arrowhead. His artifact collection contains over 1000 arrowheads, spears, scrapers and axe heads. It is estimated that 90% of the collection was found in Tama & Marshall Counties in Iowa.

239 rare & historical hand written letter by Joseph eugene "red" sullivan. A two page hand written letter on "U.S.S. Juneau" stationary, dated July 2, 1942, just a few months before the tragic sinking of the Juneau, which resulted in the death of "Red" Sullivan and his four brothers, all stationed aboard the same ship. It was this terrible wartime tragedy that was the impetus for the creation of the "Sullivan Act" a Federal law preventing next of kin to be staioned in or serve in the same theater of war. This fact was most recently revisited in the Steven Spielberg movie "Saving Private Ryan". A rare offering with interesting content including the mention of a Sullivan relative who re-entered the Navy provoking Joe to write "That makes six stars in your window now…" and " Well Mom, all of us boys are O.K. so don’t worry any." Written on U.S.S. Juneau stationary which includes a printed image of the doomed ship, the letter reads: "Dear Folks; Just a few lines to let you folks know that we are o.k. How’s every one back home. Tell them all hello for me. I suppose Jimmie is getting to be quite a man by now. How’s the little fella getting along? I suppose he can talk quite plain now. How’s Sis? Has she gone back to work yet? Have you folks heard from Marge lately? I got a couple of letters from her the other day. She’s sure a swell kid. She thinks quite a bit of Sis too. You folks and her write back & forth to each other. It will keep you both from being lonely. So don’t be too surprised if you folks meet another Sullivan in the future. Have you seen any of the motorcycle gang lately? Tell Pop and all hello. Send me a piece out of the paper when Hank came back in the Navy. That makes six stars in your window now, also six Sullivans in the Navy also. I might run across him one of these days. When I was a kid, I used to hear him talk of the Navy. Seems sort of funny, hearing that he is back in. Mom, if you can find time drop Marge a few lines. She wants to meet you folks. We are engaged, so one of these days you’ll be meeting her. Do you think she could get a job at Raths? Then I could see you folks and her too at the same time if I should get leave sometime I would like to have the knot tied in Waterloo. Let me know if you think she could get a job at Raths. Well Mom, all of us boys are o.k. so don’t worry anyway. Write when you can. Your red headed son, J.E. Sullivan, Red." Lot comes with related material including a letter from the Capt. Of the new U.S.S. Juneau, dated 1949 and thanking Mr. & Mrs. Sullivan for their participation in a party for under-privileged children – on U.S.S. Juneau stationary. Also, an 8" x 10" glossy official Navy photo (1943) depicting Mr. & Mrs. Sullivan, their daughter and an Admirial apparently at a ship launching. Also another 8" x 10" glossy depicting the 5 Sullivan brothers around an open hatch, another letter of thanks to Sullivans dated 1949 on U.S. Navy letterhead, a local Waterloo Dailiy Courier clipping depicting the brothers announcing their enlistment, plus 15 other war period and earlier photos depicting various persons.
