Conger Metcalf (1914-1998) was a beloved
artist, a native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a graduate of
Coe College and a one time student of Marvin Cone. He
spent his adult life in Boston where he taught and
produced the art he became so well known for. In
addition to wonderful still life renderings, Metcalf
is probably best recognized for his figurative works
wherein he captures the often pensive mood of his
subjects – whether it be an Italian street urchin (a
reflection of his WWII residence in Europe), a
beautiful woman in elaborate costume, or perhaps just
a face study. Generally working with oil color &
graphite on clay coated paper, the artist’s
technique and draftsmanship were of the highest
quality. His style was poetically expressive in the
manner of Neo-Romanticism. Being recognized as a very
gifted American artist and a very giving humanitarian
underlies the great love of Metcalf’s work. His
works can be found in numerous private & public
collections throughout the United States. |

ICON: The Tolaskaya Mother of God, circa 1800.
A finely painted image of this rarely encountered
type. This image is said to have appeared to Bishop
Prokhoriy near midnight in the year 1314. He saw it
floating in a column of light beyond the river. He
crossed over a bridge leading to the apparition and
prayed before the image, leaving his staff there when
he returned. Later, when servants were sent to fetch
the staff, they found the icon in the branches of a
tree. A church was built to house the image, and in
the year 1392 the icon began to exude fragrant healing
oil (“myrrh”). The Christ child is on his mother’s
left; he appears as though clambering up her lap to
place his right hand about her neck and his left hand
against her breast. The borders with Saint Harlampy
(left) and the Holy Prince Georgiy (right). Overlaid
with a fine repoussé and chased silvered metal riza.
12.5”x10”. Rare. Estimate
$1,500-$2,000 |

ICON: The New Testament Trinity Among the Powers,
circa 1890. A colorful and complex icon depicting the
Trinity Image at center, Christ on the left holding
the Gospels open to Matthew 11:28, God the Father on
the right, and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove
above them. The ring which surrounds them represents
the heavenly powers, or different ranks of angels
shown here as Seraphim and Cherubim. The four red
points radiating outward from the circle depicting the
symbols of the four Evangelists. Outside the ring Mary
holds a scroll upon which is written “Ruler Most
Gracious Lord Jesus Christ...” On the right John the
Forerunner with a scroll upon which is written, “Repent,
for the kingdom of God is at hand.” At the top
Angels of the Lord look on. The borders with the
Guardian Angel, Basil the Great, Alexi and Paraskeva.

ICON: Mother of God, Melter of Evil Hearts, 19th
century, Ural mountains region. A bold and beautiful
image painted on a gold leaf ground. Here the Mother
of God is depicted above a wall; she holds her son on
her left arm, and a ladder with her right hand. The
ladder is an Akathist symbol of Mary the “Heavenly
ladder on which God descended.” In a circle on her
breast is the Holy Spirit as a dove. The title
inscribed over the Virgins right shoulder identifies
the subject as, “Umyagchenie Zluikh Serdets” -
Melter of Evil Hearts. The borders with Sts. Samon,
Guriy and Aviv, these being the patron saints of
fidelity in marriage, also with the Holy Martyr
George. Exceptional detail and quality. 14”x12”.
Estimate $1,750-$2,500 Note: I have often seen
this subject combined with Samon, Guriy and Aviv on
the borders with the addition of a male saint.
Considering the title and the patronage of the three
saints, I often wonder if icons such as the offered
lot were prescribed by the local priest to a wife
whose husband had been unfaithful, in this case a
husband named “George”. - James Jackson |

ICON: The Three Handed Mother, circa 1890. The
“Three-Handed” Mother of God (Greek Trikherousa)
is a famous Mt. Athos icon still kept at the Serbian
Monastery of Khilandari on that “Holy Mountain.”
It is said that in the 8th century the
noted anti-iconoclast John of Damascus was in the
service of the Caliph of that city. The iconoclast
Byzantine Emperor Leo attempted to alienate John’s
employer with forged letters in John’s handwriting
which urged Leo to attack the Caliph. These forgeries
were accepted by the Caliph, who had John’s hand
struck off as punishment. John took his severed hand
to an icon of the Mother of God (attributed to St.
Luke), and prayed to be healed so that he might
continue to write against the iconoclasts. The Mother
of God heard his prayer and promised to heal him if he
would compose hymns to her and to Christ. In gratitude
for his healing, John had a commemorative silver hand
affixed to the lower part of the image. Later
painters, copying this image, often misunderstood the
added hand and made it a third hand of the Mother of
God. However, in the case of the offered lot, the hand
is painted with a silver metal hue to denote the
correct interpretation of the story. The exceptionally
high quality of painting and technique would lead one
to suspect this was a product of the village of
Palekh. A large and impressive icon in excellent
condition. 14”x12.25”.

ICON: St. John the Evangelist, 19th
century. An exceptionally well painted icon. John
holds the Gospels open to his own which begins as
written here, “In the beginning was the Word, and
the Word was with God...” He is shown with his
symbol, the lion and the Holy Spirit depicted as a
small angel whispering divine inspiration into his
ear. Depicted in this manner, with his hand held
meditatively to his lips, he is generally called “John
the Theologian in Silence.” The entire image
overlaid with a finely crafted gilded and repoussé
metal riza. The garments of John overlaid with a
padded form covered with a profusion of glass beads.
Fully painted beneath riza and inscribed in Slavonic,
“The Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian”.

ICON: Saint George, 19th century. A
colorful and well painted image of the mounted warrior
who thrusts his lance through the dragon below him. In

Christ delivers a blessing from above. The borders
with Saint Stephan, Anufrius, Sergiy of Radonezh and
the Venerable Moses. The title at top reads, “The
Image of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious.”
The colors and style would suggest this icon is most
likely from the hand of a Palekh trained iconographer.

ICON: The Assembly of the Archangel Michael,
circa 1890. An absolutely fantastic quality icon from
either the village of Palekh or Mstera, most likely
the latter. At center Christ Immanuel is depicted upon
a disk held by the Archangel Gabriel (left) and
Raphael (right). Directly behind them in the center is
the Archangel Michael who holds two transparent disks
inscribed with the abbreviated name of Christ acting
as a seal of the Savior. He is surrounded by the other
archangels, each identified by an inscription within
their haloes. The stylistic clouds with multi-color
shading, together with the single hair paint brush
detail signify the painter of this icon was a master.
The abbreviated title at top reads, “The Image of
the Assembly of the Holy General Michael.”
