Hazel Livingston
Engel (American 1906-1999)
Born and raised in Cedar Falls,
Iowa, Hazel Livingston Engel studied art at Iowa
State Teachers College, graduating in the 1920s.
She was hired as the director of Art Curriculum
for Butler County, Iowa. She apparently did not
produce much, if any, during that time.
Approximately 15
years later, an apparent mental breakdown caused
her to take leave of her family and move back to
her girlhood home and move in with her mother. It is at
this time that she began to paint again. She is
the sister of famous early American aviator
"John Livingston" for whom author
Richard Bach reportedly saw as one of the
inspirations for his 1970 best selling book
"Jonathan Livingston Seagull". Hazel
became quite active in the local art scene
exhibiting and painting with other local women
artists. Her paintings have an innocent naive
quality. Her subjects are either regional scenes or
fanciful tranquil imagery with melodramatic
titles. The Regionalist influence in her work can
be readily seen. She continued to paint into her
eighties until severe arthritis prevented her from
holding a brush.
