November 20th - 22nd, 1999 AuctionLot 798: attributed to John Casper Wild (American
1804-1846) Estimate...............$1,500-$2,000 John Casper Wild was an important contributor to American Frontier Art through his chronicling of St. Louis and the Mississippi Valley in the form of lithographs. Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Wild immigrated to America around 1830. He worked first in Philadelphia and then Cincinnati as a lithographer. His first major body of work was a set of lithographs depicting 20 views of Philadelphia. From 1839-1843 Wild lived and worked in St. Louis where he produced a set of lithographs depicting various views of St. Louis. However, he is best known for lithograph series titled: "The Valley of the Mississippi," which is known to have contained at least 28 scenic views of the Mississippi north of St. Louis. Wild's lithographs are quite simple, even naive, and it is believed that his paintings were used as a basis for his lithographs. He died in Davenport, Iowa in 1846.
