Marjorie D. Campbell was born
into a family of artists in Columbus, Ohio. Both
her father William Dallas Campbell and her mother
Harriet Dunn Campbell were art teachers who
instructed in private schools, public school and
college. Marjorie received her Master of Arts
degree from Ohio State University in 1933. She
taught art in the public school system from
1934-1947. During her years as a public school
teacher she spent her summers traveling and
painting. It was during her summer sojourns that
Campbell studied with a variety of prominent
artists including Hans Hoffman at Providence town,
Mass., Millard Sheets in California and Emil
Bisttram at Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico. She
returned to the University of Ohio in 1948 where
she was an associated professor of art. It
was while teaching there she met fellow faculty
member and then unknown artist Roy Lichtenstein.
In 1949 Campbell accepted a position as Assistant
Professor of Art at the University of Northern
Iowa, Cedar Falls where she retired in 1978.
