Group Includes over 150 Items Including Four Diaries, 100 Letters, Documents & Photo Images. A Sampling of Letters Includes: "Last Thursday our Corps was reviewed by President Lincoln and Hooker. Uncle Ave is as homely as his pictures represent. In fact the ugliest man I ever saw." and "Guarding the Rebel prisoners pleases the darkies greatly - they get off some amusing expressions - "Well Sam you gurading Massa over der eh?" Regarding an engagement that went awry he writes: "The blame I presume will be shuffled on to the colored troops, because their color happens to attract notoriety, but I know that they have behaved as well, if not better, than the white troops." And from a letter to his parents informing them of his death: "If he died young, he fell as a patriot, and may the blood of his young heart poured forth so lavishly at his country's altar, help to bind together our Union stronger than ever."
