TATIANA ANATOLIEVNA IVASCHENKO (Russian 20th century) “Bird of Happiness” oil on canvas, signed lower right, 48”x36”. Estimate $2,500-$3,500.  In Russian folklore there is a well known creature called the Bird of Happiness. She is half woman and half bird. Her beauty is overwhelming and her mystical powers are immense. Many Russian heroes traveled the world in quest of this intriguing creature, as it was believed that she would bring happiness to anyone who could capture her. One of these heroes was Sadko. He was inspired by the thought that bringing this bird to his homeland of Novgorod would save his people from constant attacks by their enemies and bring peace and prosperity to his countrymen. For years Sadko traveled the world fighting evil and skirting danger in his search. Eventually Sadko discovered that in truth, happiness meant different things to different people. This led him to realize that his true happiness lay at home with his loving wife and children who faithfully waited for him to return. Sadko abandoned his search for the bird and hurried back home to Novgorod to protect his family and fight the enemies of his motherland. The stories of Sadko’s adventures became the subject of many songs and made him a celebrated hero, known to all Russian children and adults alike. Sadko’s search for the bird of happiness has transformed into his own spiritual journey of self discovery and growth. The story serves as a reminder that one should appreciate the day in which they live, the things they have and those bonds of preexisting friendship. On the other hand, the bird of happiness embodies the driving force that makes us live more fully and creatively. For some it may be as simple as inspiration, for others it may define the whole purpose of their lives. The meaning of happiness seems to be so obvious. But like the line of the horizon it keeps us moving until we complete the circle of our journey and find our happiness again.

John Casper Wild was an important contributor to American Frontier Art through his chronicling of St. Louis and the Mississippi Valley in the form of lithographs.  Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Wild immigrated to America around 1830. He worked first in Philadelphia and then Cincinnati as a lithographer.  His first major body of work was a set of lithographs depicting 20 views of Philadelphia. From 1839-1843 Wild lived and worked in St. Louis where he produced a set of lithographs depicting various views of St. Louis. However, he is best known for lithograph series titled: "The Valley of the Mississippi," which is known to have contained at least 28 scenic views of the Mississippi north of St. Louis. Wild's lithographs are quite simple, even naive, and it is believed that his paintings were used as a basis for his lithographs. He died in Davenport, Iowa in 1846.
